Course Overview

This course deals with the legal and management aspects of managing the risk. Keeping everyone in your academy and independent school safe from harm is a key priority. The Approved Code of Practice (L8) applies to the control of Legionella bacteria in any undertaking involving a work activity and to premises controlled in connection with a trade, business or where water is used or stored eg hot and cold water systems, pools, showers. It goes without saying that your properties will include buildings where the risk of Legionella bacteria needs to be controlled.

This course has been specifically tailored for academies and independent schools based on our long standing relationship and experience of understanding training needs for local authorities and universities. Governors / Head Teachers of schools converting to academy status or independent schools often do not realise that they automatically assume the role of Dutyholder. It is the academies Responsible Person’s duty to ensure the requirements with legislation and the approved code of practice (L8) are complied with. This course will enable you to understand these duties and responsibilities.

Topics covered on the course will include:

  • Background to Legionella and legionnaires’ disease, including the life cycle of Legionella
  • Understanding law, regulations and guidance, including COSHH, RIDDOR and HSE L8 ACOP
  • Case studies, outbreaks and prosecutions
  • Who is the Responsible Person and what are their duties?
  • How to set up a management system for your Academy or Independent School
  • Record keeping and review
  • What should your site log book contain?
  • Monitoring tasks
