Legionella Risk Assessments and BS8580-1:2019 Event

In 2010, the British Standards Institute issued BS8580 Water Quality – risk assessments for Legionella Control – code of practice.  For the first time, a published standard on what a Legionella risk assessment should include.  In 2019, British Standards issued an update to BS8580, further refining the standards for these risk assessments.

Jim is a highly experienced water safety specialist with over 30 years of expertise in water quality management, compliance, and system safety. He began his career in environmental water and microbiology, building a strong scientific foundation for senior roles across healthcare, education, local government, and commercial sectors.

He has delivered UKAS-accredited Legionella risk assessments, water safety audits, design reviews, training, and outbreak investigations, working with NHS Trusts, local authorities, and commercial organisations to ensure compliance and manage risk. Jim has also collaborated with national bodies, including the UKHSA, OHID, and HSE.

Now a Senior Consultant and Authorising Engineer (Water) at the Water Hygiene Centre, Jim provides independent expert advice, supports system design reviews, delivers Legionella training, and leads water safety projects. Known for his clear communication and practical approach, he balances regulatory compliance with real-world risk management solutions.
