This 1 hr session aims to inform the delegate on what a Water Safety Group is, with definitions from the World Health Organisation and the Department of Health.

Utilising healthcare guidance HTM 04-01 Safe Water in Healthcare Premises, which provides some of the clearest guidance on who should be part of the WSG, outlining the remit of a WSG and associated Terms of Reference, this being the backbone to ensuring proactive water safety risk management within an organisation in order to provide assurance at Board level.

Jim is a highly experienced water safety specialist with over 30 years of expertise in water quality management, compliance, and system safety. He began his career as an environmental waters and microbiology specialist, building a strong scientific foundation that underpins his work across healthcare, education, local government, and commercial sectors.
He has delivered UKAS-accredited Legionella risk assessments, water safety audits, system design reviews, Legionella training, and outbreak investigations. Jim has also worked closely with NHS Trusts, local authorities, and national bodies, including UKHSA, OHID, and the HSE, supporting compliance, risk reduction, and public health protection.
Now a Senior Consultant and Authorising Engineer (Water) at the Water Hygiene Centre, Jim provides independent technical advice, reviews system designs, supports water safety projects, and delivers specialist training.
Known for his clear communication and methodical approach, he combines regulatory expertise with practical, risk-based solutions tailored to client needs.
This CPD briefing will also help to identify issues/problems with poor-performing WSG and how these can be addressed.
